Become A STAIR Tutor

Two hours a week can make all the difference in the life of a student who is struggling in reading.

Jeremiah came to STAIR reluctant to read and embarrassed. He struggled with recognizing basic words and his attention span was less than ideal. But that all changed when Marie Hardy, a Birmingham Police Officer and STAIR tutor, walked into his life.

Marie made it a priority to come every week to work with Jeremiah to help improve his reading skills and self-esteem. Week by week they built a rapport. Marie shared that when she was Jeremiah's age there were a lot of words she didn't know and that made him feel little bit better. Slowly but surely his self-esteem began to rise as he learned more site words, finished more books and read out loud with fewer and fewer prompts from Marie.

His dad said that he has seen a transformation in his son. Jeremiah was once embarrassed when he read. But now, he is eager to learn and on his way to making A-B honor roll.

Tutors develop one-on-one relationships, which make this volunteer experience such a rewarding and worthwhile effort. STAIR has an excellent, user-friendly curriculum that makes it easy for volunteers to follow with no outside prep time. Volunteers must be a Freshmen in High School or older to volunteer. We encourage parents of high school students to attend orientation with their child. Parents must sign a consent form for students 18 or younger.

Volunteer Commitment:

  • Attend one 2-hour training class.
  • Observe with another tutor one afternoon before being paired with a student.
  • Tutor a student one afternoon a week, between the hours of 3-5PM from Sept-April.
  • Pass a background check.

I want to be a Marie to a Jeremiah!

"The program produces tangible results, allowing us to see the difference being made in these children’s lives."

"STAIR is a wonderful program that helps meet the needs of children who just need a boost in reading. It is what retired people all over America need to be doing to fight illiteracy. Seniors who volunteer their time and talents with school children can become part of the solution to our educational woes today."
